For the treatment of life-threatening infections, particularly those caused by Haemophilus influenzae, and also for typhoid fever
Dosage & Administration
Adult and children : 50 mg/ kg daily in 4 divided doses up to 100 mg/kg daily in 4 divided doses for meningitis or sever infections
Trivial infections. History of hypersensitivity of toxic reactions, pregnancy, breast-feeding and porphyria.
Warning & Precautions
Serious and fatal blood dyscrasia (aplastic anemia, hypoplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia and granulocytopenia) are known to occur after administration of chloramphenicol. It is recommended that blood studies should be made in cases of prolonged or intermittent administration with drugs liable to depress bone marrow function.
Serious and sometimes fatal adverse effects and it should be discontinued immediately on the appearance of toxic symptoms. Gastrointestinal symptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can follow after oral administration.
